From Culture to Clay:
The Story Behind Tree of Life Saramics

Where South African roots meet Australian landscapes in clay

Tree of Life Ceramics is the creative expression of Lynnette "Sara" Morton, who has crafted a unique pottery style inspired by her South African heritage and the natural beauty of her new Australian home.

Growing up in South Africa, Sara developed a deep appreciation for intricate patterns and bold colours, rooted in her cultural traditions. After moving to Australia, she found fresh inspiration in the native flora and fauna that paint the landscape. This blend of influences fuels her creativity, allowing her to create pieces that honour both her roots and the vibrant world around her. Each piece from Tree of Life Ceramics is a testament to this rich, artistic journey.

Working from her cosy home studio in Palmyra, Sara pours her heart into every creation.

Her work is wheel-thrown, crafted with various stoneware clays to produce functional homeware designed for everyday enjoyment. The process can take up to two weeks from start to finish, giving Sara time to focus on the details that make each piece unique.

“The best part,” she says, “is playing with glazes. It’s always like Christmas when opening the kiln.”

Her joy in the glazing process shines through in each design, often delighting customers who find a hidden pattern at the base of their new piece

A Standout Moment:

Celebrating the Little Details

One of Sara’s favourite parts of sharing her work is seeing customers’ reactions to the details she includes in each piece.

Often, a playful or intricate design can be found on the bottom of her creations, bringing a smile to those who discover it. This small touch has become a delightful signature of Tree of Life Ceramics, highlighting Lynnette’s commitment to crafting pottery that sparks joy.

Sustainable Practices:
Mindful Creations for a Better Future

Sustainability is at the heart of Tree of Life Ceramics. Sara carefully selects locally sourced and reclaimed clay, choosing natural, non-toxic glazes whenever possible. She also recycles any unfired clay, ensuring nothing goes to waste. Her pieces are designed with longevity in mind, encouraging customers to embrace mindful, eco-conscious living. Lynnette also packages her products in eco-friendly materials, ensuring her commitment to sustainability goes beyond the creation process.

Facing Challenges and Future Aspirations

Navigating Perth’s competitive pottery scene has been one of Sara’s biggest challenges. Marketing can be tough, especially in a city filled with talented potters. Despite this, she dreams of growing Tree of Life Ceramics and one day establishing a collective space for Perth potters to showcase their craft. Her vision for this community-driven space is to foster collaboration, creativity, and support for local artisans.
